June 2018
Location:
Wen Jia Wei Village, Gangdong, China
Role

A narrow, mediocre and deserted no-name corridor may let people despise, however this particular style is exactly a symbol of this - Wan Jia Wei Village.
Wan Jia Wei Village is an old Chinese village located in Donggang, China. Different from other residential area, Wan Jia Wei is a complex village with old factories, old brick houses, 3-storeys mixed use (flat shop) buildings, schools, shopping mall... etc. Although it contains many different types of business and background of people, the common and symbol of all of them is - they all have to pass through the no-name corridors to reach their places.
As a visitor who has been there a few times, the corridors, in architecture wording - circulation paths, are really attractive and interesting. For the resident, the corridors are the main path to go their places. But in visitors eyes, the corridors are like playing hide-and-seek to them, always got surprise by passing through them. The corridors also show the estrangement between the people.
Taking this into consideration, the hostel is using the knotting paths representing the relationship of the people and as a concept and trying to connect and intertwine in the new youth hostel.
